The Tarn beyond Albi

Albi is an ideal base for exploring the riches of the Tarn department. Here are our favourite day trips by car from the Red City.

Cordes-sur-Ciel (30 mins)

Perched on its rocky outcrop, Cordes-sur-Ciel is one of the most beautiful villages in France. This medieval Cathar village offers dizzying views over the Cérou valley and boasts superb Gothic mansions.

Don’t miss: the Grand-Rue des Casernes, the medieval market hall, the Halle well. Best for: half a day, art and craft lovers.

Gaillac and its vineyard (20 mins)

Just 20 km away, Gaillac is home to one of the oldest vineyards in France. The town itself is worth visiting (Abbaye Saint-Michel, abbey gardens, Museum of Arts and Wine), and the Gaillac AOC appellation features unique indigenous grape varieties.

Tip: follow the Gaillac wine route for a scenic drive through the vines.

Castres and the Goya Museum (45 mins)

Castres has one of the most important museums of Spanish art outside Spain, with a remarkable collection of Goya and Golden-Age painters. The colourful houses along the banks of the Agout are also worth a stroll.

The Viaur gorges (1h)

For lovers of wild landscapes, the Viaur gorges offer breathtaking scenery. The Viaur viaduct (1902), an engineering masterpiece, can be viewed from the valley floor. Plenty of marked hiking trails.

Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val (1h15)

On the banks of the Aveyron, Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val is a remarkably preserved medieval village. Its Sunday market is one of the most beautiful and lively in the South-West. The nearby Aveyron gorges are ideal for hiking and kayaking.

Practical tip

A personal vehicle is recommended for these trips, although Cordes and Gaillac are accessible by public transport from Albi. Car hire is available in Albi-Marmande.
